Flat Rates
Some major metropolitan areas have laws to require taxis to give a flat rate to the airport. For example, in Manhattan, New York City, the flat rate to JFK Airport is $45. Denver is another city with flat rates to major destinations. These flat rates can often save you money, so a taxi to the airport might cost you less than you might think. -
Note the Taxi Number and Company
It is a good idea to mention the taxi number and company out loud when you get in, either to the driver or yourself. There are a few reasons for this. If your driver is thinking of taking you for a little extra ride he or she might think twice if you make that person aware that you have noted the number. Secondly, if you happen to forget anything in the taxi, you may be more likely to get it back if you at least know the number. Saying it out loud may help you remember. -
Extra Charges
Be aware that most taxis, as regulated by city law, do charge a small extra rate for extra passengers. For example, in Chicago it is a flat fee of $1.00 for the first extra passenger and $.50 for each additional passenger, unless the passenger is under 12 or over 65 years of age. Although more common in Europe, there can also be an extra charge per bag, or piece of luggage. -
Request a Call
If you live in a less dense city where hailing a taxi is not common, like Los Angeles or San Diego, many taxi companies will offer to call you when the taxi is arriving. This way you don't have to be standing outside waiting. You may have to request this service when you call for pickup. -
Availability Lights
In general, though not everywhere, a taxi cab's availability is indicated by the lights on the top of the car beside the taxi sign itself. If the lights are on, that taxi is available to hail. Otherwise it is not. Keep in mind that the taxi sign itself is always lit - the availability lights are smaller to either side.
